Unless They Are Prayed

Prayers
Life without purpose is barren indeed.

There can’t be a harvest unless you plant the seed.
There can’t be attainment unless there’s a goal,
And a man’s but a robot unless there’s a soul.
If we send no ships out, no ships will come in,
And unless there’s a contest, nobody can win.
For games can’t be won unless they are played,
and prayers can’t be answered unless they are prayed.
So whatever is wrong with your life today,
You’ll find a solution if you kneel down and pray.
Not just for pleasure, enjoyment and health,
Not just for honors, prestige or wealth,
But pray for a purpose to make life worth living,
And pray for the joy of unselfish giving,
For great is your gladness and rich your reward
When you make your life’s purpose the choice of the Lord. ~ Helen Steiner Rice

The Choice

Choices

To every man there openeth
a way, and ways, and a way.
And the high soul climbs the high way,
And the low soul gropes the low:
And in between, on the misty flats,
The rest drift to and fro.

But to every man there openeth
A high way and a low,
And every man decideth.
The way his soul shall go. ~ John Oxenham

God’s Minute

1039778_10202893338239621_938852808_oI’ve only just a minute,
Only sixty seconds in it.
Forced upon me, can’t refuse it,
Didn’t seek it, didn’t choose it,
But it’s up to me to use it.
I must suffer it I lose it,
Give an account if I abuse it,
Just a tiny little minute,
But eternity is in it. ~ Dr. Benjamin Mays

Desiderata

wisdomGo placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others,
even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself.
Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be critical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment
it is as perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. ~ Max Ehrmann (1927)

I Walked a Mile

pleasure, sorrow
I walked a mile with Pleasure;

She chatted all the way;
But left me none the wiser
For all she had to say.
I walked a mile with Sorrow,
And ne’er a word said she;
But, oh! The things I learned from her,
When sorrow walked with me. ~ Robert Browning Hamilton

If God Should Go on Strike

God, Poetry“How good it is that God above has never gone on strike.
because he was not treated fair in things he didn’t like,
If only once he’d given up and said, “That’s it, I’m through!”
I’ve had enough of those on earth, so this is what I’ll do.
I’ll give my orders to the sun-cut off the heat supply!
And to the moon-give no more light, and run the oceans dry.
then just to make things really tough and put the pressure on,
turn off the vital oxygen till every breath is gone!
You know He would be justified, if fairness was the game,
for no one has been more abused or met with more disdain
than God, and yet He carries on, supplying you and me
with all the favors of His grace, and everything for free.
Men say they want a better deal, and so on strike they go,
but what a deal we’ve given God to whom all things we owe.
We don’t care whom we hurt to gain the things we like;
but what a mess we’d all be in, if God should go on strike.” ~ Walt Huntley

Simon the Cyrenian Speaks

Simon-of-Cyrene_artHe never spoke a word to me,
And yet He called my name;
He never gave a sign to me,
And yet I knew and came.
At first I said, “I will not bear
His cross upon my back;
He only seeks to place it there
Because my skin is black.”
But He was dying for a dream,
And He was very meek,
And in His eyes there shone a gleam
Men journey far to seek.
It was Himself my pity bought;
I did for Christ alone
What all of Rome could not have wrought
With bruise of lash or stone.~ Anonymous
